Developing ties between disaster spiritual care and mental health providers is essential for providing effective services for those affected by disasters. In this third interdisciplinary event for 9/11 clergy and mental health providers who serve disaster survivors, the focus will be on practical aspects of collaboration, with an emphasis on shared experiences and the development of concrete, real-world resources. The conference will consist of a stimulating keynote presentation, followed by small group discussions arranged by geographical area to foster relationship-building and resource identification, a large group review of lessons learned, and a final presentation to clarify key issues and bring closure to the day. The practical information generated will be compiled and distributed for general use following the conference.

NYDIS in Article about 9/11 Recovery Worker’s Struggle
Disaster News Network’s February 17 article Post-9/11 Needs Surfacing features the positive impact of aid a ground zero recovery worker received from the NYC 9/11 Unmet Needs Roundtable. Aaron Edelman currently faces serious illnesses due to his work in the clean-up effort. The article states, "He has powerful words about those who have helped him since September, noting that they've brought him back from the edge. The involved agencies, including NYDIS’s' Sept. 11 Unmet Needs Roundtable, helped him pay months of back rent. 'I was getting evicted from my house and they got me financial help. They've helped me so much, I can't imagine where I'd be without them,' said Edelman."

Help: Katrina Evacuees Need Housing
Katrina evacuees still need your help. There are an estimated 2,000 households living in the five boroughs. About 100 families remain in area hotels, and FEMA has begun "terminating" hotel stays, forcing evacuees into the streets or city shelters. The Katrina Evacuee Sponsorship Program, formed by NYDIS and Episcopal Migration Ministries, offers ways you can get involved:
-
-
Help an evacuee family move
Offer pro-bono medical and mental health support
Provide emotional and spiritual support
Make space available for a support group (facilitator provided by EMM/NYDIS)
Sponsor a family for a period of 3-6 months and help them secure housing and a job
EMM and NYDIS will train and support your group and provide guidance, knowledge and expertise along the way. Call us today to get started:

Relocated from New Orleans to New York City via Houston after their home was destroyed, they were housed through a Red Cross program in a hotel near these two churches. When the housing program ended, the family had nowhere to go and ended up on the street, with Mom due to deliver her baby any day.

Homeland Security Chief Announces FEMA Reorganization
Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff announced wide-ranging changes to FEMA on Feb. 13 on the heels of a congressional report blaming government-wide ineptitude for mishandling Hurricane Katrina relief. He rejected criticism that his agency is preoccupied with terror threats, at the expense of preparing for natural disasters like Hurricane Katrina. The first steps to overhauling FEMA include creating a full-time response force of 1,500 new employees and establishing a more reliable system to report on disasters as they unfold.
