NYC Puerto Rico Long-Term Recovery Group

Marking the half-year anniversary of Hurricane Maria’s landfall on Puerto Rico, on March 20th, NYDIS hosted over 40 NYC Puerto Rican grassroots activists, nonprofits, and VOAD partners to begin formation of the NYC Puerto Rico Long-Term Recovery Group. Participants shared situational awareness and began a discussion on unmet needs facing evacuees who want to stay in New York City and those who want to return to the island. The NYC PR-LTRG has developed an Recovery Assistance Guide for evacuees and is meeting monthly to discuss ongoing recovery efforts throughout NYC.

To date, NYDIS’ NYC Evacuee Unmet Needs Roundtable (UNR) has distributed $140,027.95 in sustainable recovery assistance to assist 63 households secure sustainable, long-term housing, purchase furniture, relocate out of state, or pay for transportation back to safe and habitable housing

While conducting exit interviews and unmet needs assessments at the NYC Hurricane Evacuee Services Center in East Harlem in 2017, NYDIS recognized the primary reported unmet need was clothing, and in response opened an Evacuee Marketplace distributing new, free winter

Pa'Lante Puerto Rico

NYDIS is partnering with actress and activist Luna Lauren Velez’s hurricane recovery project, #PaLantePR, to support the disaster recovery process and resilience of survivors of Hurricane's Irma and Maria in Puerto Rico.
